Programmatic vs direct buying

Buy direct when you want a specific placement, a sponsorship, a guarantee, or a relationship with a publisher's sales team; buy programmatically when you want scale, audience targeting, frequency control across publishers, and the ability to adjust daily. Programmatic guaranteed covers the middle: a reserved buy executed through the pipes. Most plans run both, with direct for a few anchor placements and programmatic for everything else.
