Brand vs performance advertising

Brand advertising builds memory and preference among people who are not buying today; performance advertising converts people who are. Brand is measured by lift in awareness and consideration and by long-term share; performance by conversions and cost per result. The distinction is about time horizon and measurement, since the same ad can do both, and advertisers who cut brand for performance typically see performance costs rise over the following year as the pool of people who already know them shrinks.
