Most food and beverage sales still happen in a physical store, which makes digital advertising easy to doubt. For Birds Eye and Duncan Hines we set out to prove that Facebook moved groceries off real shelves. Datalogix matched exposed households to actual store sales and measured 29x and 12x returns on incremental sales. Birds Eye, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Dream Non-Dairy, Duncan Hines, Vlasic, and Voss Water are among the food and beverage clients on this site.

Retailers now sell their shoppers back to the brands on their own shelves. Sponsored listings and retailer audiences get negotiated like any other media, against incremental sales the retailer can show, and the plan accounts for the sales those placements would have collected anyway.

Share of voice buys share of market on a delay, so the plan sets the spend level on purpose, by season and by retailer, and rotates creative before fatigue shows up in the cost per sale. A holdout settles what the media added, and any marketing team can run one.

Packaging rules are reaching the brand as well, with states banning PFAS in food packaging on fixed dates. The PFAS Regulations Register tracks those bans state by state.

An engagement usually begins with the retailer list and a measurement plan agreed before launch: which sales count, who measures them, and what the holdout looks like.

Quick answers

Measurement

Can you prove digital advertising sells products in physical stores?

Yes, with a measurement partner that matches ad exposure to store purchases. For Birds Eye and Duncan Hines, Datalogix measured 29x and 12x returns on incremental store sales from Facebook advertising. The design is agreed before launch, including the holdout that shows what would have sold anyway.

Retail media

How should food and beverage brands buy retail media?

As negotiated media. The plan asks each retailer for incremental results, compares the cost with the brand's other channels, and counts the sales those placements would have collected without the ad. Rates and placements get revisited every season.

Spend levels

How much should a food or beverage brand spend on digital advertising?

Enough to hold its share of voice in the category, and more when it wants to grow. Spending above market share tends to build share on a delay, so the plan sets the level by season and retailer and checks it with holdout tests.
